AlmostUnread The mark-unread solution for NetNewsWire iPhone/iPad

The Problem

NetNewsWire is a fan-damn-tasic news reader for the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. It's just missing one feature: a mark-unread button.

The Solution

Use the features NetNewsWire does offer to approximate marking an item as unread.

Note: this requires Google Reader sync.

How it Works

  1. Find an item you want to mark unread
  2. Star the item
  3. The item will appear as unread in your AlmostUnread feed

Cool! Let's do it…

Log in to Google Reader and go to your Reader Settings

Click on Folders and Tags and make your Starred Items public

Click to view public page

Copy your Starred Items feed URL

Enter that URL here

Type in hard-to-read letters

What if I lose my feed URL?

No problem, just create it again.

Why not use InstaPaper for this?

InstaPaper is great, we're both users and fans. However I (Alex) use InstaPaper differently than I use NetNewsWire. I sit down with InstaPaper every week or two for in-depth reading while I use NetNewsWire semi-daily for more casual reading. Also, InstaPaper isn't great for video content, etc. - stuff you probably want to see on your main computer.

What if I don't want to clutter my Starred Items like this?

If you already do something interesting with your Starred Items, this may not be a good solution for you. If you are a longtime NetNewsWire user and only really use Google Reader as a sync back-end, AlmostUnread will likely be right up your alley.
